This museum provides – across its 30 rooms - a very comprehensive overview of Italian painting as well as sculpture from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. Located on the top floor of the PittiPalace, adjoining the Gallery of Costume, the collection was started in the late 18th century by Leopold of Lorraine and it was continually added on by purchases and donations. It includes masterpieces by the so called “blot painters” (Macchiaioli). Among them, works by Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini, Michele Gordigiani.Favourite subjects of this anti-academic art movement were battle fields with wounded soldiers, Tuscan coast in the area of Castiglioncello, elegantly dressed up ladies sitting at a café,or at the piano or walking with friends, or girls, like Alaide Banti in the famous portraits by Boldini.Macchiaioli style, if somewhat to be compared to Impressionists, created its own, very intense way to art.
